Splat the Cat in the Hat - Reading Month Kick Off

The month of March is reading month. All month there will be exciting things going on in our classroom and at school. A reading month calendar with all the events will be coming home today in Tuesday notes. We will also have a special visitor, Splat the Cat, coming in on Thursday to see the kids in grades K-2. To kick off reading month and to celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday yesterday we did a fun project. We made Splat the Cat in the Hat! We started by reading the Book The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss. We then also read the book Splat the Cat. The project was a fun way to bring Dr. Seuss and our special visitor together into one project. The kids loved it and they turned out great! We can't wait to read more Splat and Dr. Seuss books this month! I also included a copy of the reading month calendar at the bottom. :)

Staff Variety Show

On Friday we had a staff variety show to reward the kids for good behavior in February. Even with the cold weather and indoor recess they earned enough Phantom slips! Below are a few highlights and the 1st grade skit. :)

Dental Health Presentation

Today's dental health presentation was fantastic! Dental Assiciates did a great job and the kids were very interested. Below are some pictures and video from today.

Evergreen Theater - A Little Bit of Magic

On Tuesday morning the Evergreen Theater came to perform for the K-2 students at HC. They performed a skit called Little Bit of Magic. The kids loved it and we're talking about finding their own little bit of magic!  

Science- Force and Motion Experiments

This trimester one of our science units is Force and Motion. We have been dicussing force, pushes, pulls, work, friction, speed, and there is much more to come! Below are some pictures from today's balloon experiment. We discussed how blowing bubbles takes work. We also discusses that the force used to make bubbles is a push. 

Indoor Recess Fun

Today we had yet another day of indoor recess. The more days we have inside the more creative we have to be for entertianment. Today I brought out the cups for tower building. The kids had a blast!! 

February WDP 1st Grade Book Talk on Air

Check out our class as they participated in the February book talk LIVE on Youtube for their peers! They did a great job and we had a blast writing book reviews for three of our favorite books! Also participating in the book talk was Mrs. Zellmer's 1st grade class at Westwood Elementary. 

Siena and McKenna Read The Sand Castle

For our guided reading group today McKenna and Siena re-read the book The Sand Castle. We have been working on fluency and they are doing a great job!! 

We "Mustache" Questions While We Read

Today during reading we focused on asking questions while we read. We discussed asking questions before, during, and after reading. To help up with questioning I read the story titled Mustache by Mac Barnett. I pre-read the story and loaded it up with my own questions on stick notes. As I read I asked my questions and we discussed possible answers. We talked about how asking questions while we read will help us have a better understanding of the story. We made a poster of possible question starters and then each kiddo wrote their question on a mustache. They LOVED it! Here are some pictures and sample questions from the book. Exercise Breaks

During these cold weather days we are doing our best to stay active. We use a website called GoNoodle to get moving. Today we did one called Get Loose and one called Pop See Ko. The kids love the silly dancing. At the end of the day we did another one called Roller Coaster from our desks. This is a great way to wait inside for the buses.
