Charlie Check 1st

Yesterday Officer Jeff came in to talk to our class about being safe and the power of no. The kids really enjoyed having him and learned that you should always "Check 1st before going anywhere with anyone. If you can't check the answer is NO!"

Duckling Gets a Cookie Read Aloud

The last two weeks we have been working on reading with fluency and expression. I modeled for them the reading of Pigeon Gets a Cookie. After reading I told them they would be recording their own voices reading the story. Below you will find a video of their recording. :)

Nutrition

During the last 5 weeks we have been learning about the 5 food groups and eating healthy. To help the kids learn about the food groups we followed a dragon named Little D as he learned about the food groups and how to make healthy choices. The kids loved reading about Little D and love to tell me what foods they are eating at lunch and which group it is from. Please encourage your children to do so at home too! There are also some games your child can play at home to reinforce the things that we have learned. You can click the image below to play!

Winter Weather!

This week we spent sometime talking about dressing appropriately for the weather. We talked about how we should be wearing a winter coat,  a hat, and gloves or mittens everyday. We also discussed that if there is snow on the ground you must wear snow pants in order to play on the equipment or go in the wood chip area. This time of year can be tough to judge what recess will be like so it is best to have our things everyday just in case. Every year I also get many questions about whether or not snow pants have to be worn on the bus home. The rule in 1st grade is yes. If they they wear them to school they will be worn on the bus after school unless we have a note stating otherwise. If you do not want them to wear them home on the bus please send a bag each day for them to go home is as they do not fit well in backpacks and often get very wet. Please also be sure your child has gym shoes that stay at school each day. That way they won't have to miss out on fun and exercise in gym. Thanks so much for your help getting your child prepared for the winter weather and let me know if you have any questions!

Spinner the Spider

Hello, my name is Spinner the Spider.

I like to help my friends make connections to their reading. As a first grader your kiddo will be working on make three different kinds of connections. Text to Self – Making connections to your own experiences Text to Text – Making connections between two or more books. Text to World – Making connections between books and world events.

Today we read the book Diary of a Spider and worked on all three kinds of connections. For example some kiddos made a connection when the spider said that he had a “vacuum drill”. This made the students think of the fire drills that we have had at school. As we continued reading this story we met spider’s friends worm and fly. This made us think of the books Diary of a Worm and Diary of a Fly. Finally, the book mentioned Grandparent’s Day and we made a text to world connection. We discussed this holiday and how some families celebrate it. We also discussed things that we could do on grandparent’s day.
Please try using me while you are reading at home! J

Love,

Spinner the Spider

P.S. We also made spider hats today. Did you know spiders are not insects. Insects have 6 legs spiders have 8!

Heritage Hill Field Trip

Here are some pictures from our Heritage Hill field trip last week. The kids had a great time on the Belgian farm learning about immigration and the past. The learned how to make corn flour and butter, toured the old farm, and saw many animals. This field trip goes along perfectly with our social studies unit that we are currently working on about the past and present.

Evaporation Experiments

Today we started to discuss water and and did some water experiments. We started by painting a picture with water. As the kids painted they started to notice that the water was disappearing. They then brainstormed where it could be going and came up with a few ideas. After some discussion the kids determined that it was disappearing and going into the sky. I then introduced them to the term evaporation. We discussed that evaporation is liquid water changing into a gas called water vapor. To follow up the kids observed a humidifier changing the water into vapor. They enjoyed doing both experiments and can't wait to see how much water is left on this papers and in the humidifier in the morning. Thursday we will be moving on to what happens to water next!

Sequence of Events and Retelling

Today the kids practiced retelling stories focusing on the sequence of events. To do this we made pizzas and put them together in different sequences. They soon discovered that there was only one way that worked. We then related this to the stories we read and how it is important that we can retell story events in the order that they happened or the sequence of events. We also learned a new beanie baby comprehension strategy to help us remember to retell the stories we read. His name is Jabber the Reteller. He is a parrot so he likes to repeat/retell what he reads. We then practiced using our new strategy after hearing the story Pete's a Pizza. Please have your child practice retelling the stories you are reading at home! :)

Happy Reading!
