Our 1st Scholastic Book Box is HERE!
The Books:
How They Will be Used:
The books that were ordered will have two different purposes. One is to put them into the classroom library. The second is to use them for instruction and classroom read alouds.
When looking at a book order I try to select books that are high interest for the kids. For the classroom library I look for books that will appeal to all students. Most 1st graders LOVE Elephant and Piggie books so I selected those as my free books for the month. Fly Guy and the Owl Dairies books were also popular last year so I selected a few. For instruction I look for books that will match up with our curriculum. For example I can use the Shark Detective book to introduce looking for context clues while reading.
My main focus this year will be....
- Books that appeal to boys - Harder to find
- Books in a series - Easier to get kids hooked and keep reading
- Books that are hard cover - Last longer/better quality
Charlie Check 1st Visit
Earlier this week Officer Angel with the Hobart/Lawrence police department met with our kiddos to discuss their safety. She did a program with them called Charlie Check 1st. This program teaches them to "Check 1st before going anywhere, with anyone. If you can not check, the answer is NO!" She also discussed being "wise with their eyes" and using the power of no. Below is a picture with Charlie and Officer Angel as well as a link to a PDF with more information on the Charlie Check 1st Philosophy in case you would like to discuss it further with your kids at home.
