Colorado Writing Buddies
Yesterday we got to meet out Colorado book buddies through a Google Hangout. It was their last day of school. The kids loved talking to each other and got to ask each other questions. They love connecting with other kiddos! Below you will find a picture and a video. :)
Brown County Library Summer Reading Adventure
Yesterday the Kress Library in De Pere came to school to talk to the kids about their summer reading program. It sounds like a lot of fun and has LOTS of exciting rewards for reading 20 min a day! I highly recommend checking it out. :) If you click the image below it will take you to their website.

Reading Group Reader's Theater
Last week some of the students in our class participated in a reading group reader's theater. These groups were a combination of students from all six first grade classrooms. They did three stories titled Tops and Bottoms, The Four Little Pigs, and Splat the Cat. Below are some pictures.
Ice Cream Party
Last week on Friday we had our classroom ice cream party. The kids were so excited and really enjoyed their special treat. Thank you so much for donating to our party. All of the fun toppings made it extra special. We had vanilla ice cream with the kids choice of chocolate syrup , caramel syrup, marshmallows, sprinkles, cherries, strawberry, nerds, teddy grahams, chocolate chips, and bananas.

Yesterday we presented our classroom reader's theater. The kids did great and attendance was awesome! If you couldn't make it I recorded rehearsal from earlier today. The sound isn't great so you may need to turn it up. :0) Enjoy!

PBIS Classroom Party!!!
I am happy to inform you that our class has earned a classroom party for PBIS. As a class they had a goal to fill up Mr. Potato head and early this week they accomplished their goal. To fill up Mr. Potato head the whole class had to be caught doing something especially good or a student winner for our classroom drawing could choose to add a part. To decide on a party we tried a new way to vote. I created a Doodle poll for them to complete. All they had to do was click the link on our Sqworl page (from a Chromebook or my computer), type their name, click their choice, and hit save. Their votes were confidential and only I could see the results. They thought it was very cool and they all did it correctly. The winner was an ice cream sundae party! Today I will be sending a note home asking for parents who are willing to send in a topping (or bowls and spoons). On Monday I will follow up with what you can send. This way we won't get doubles and we will have a wide variety for the kiddos! I will supply vanilla ice cream. Our party will be on Friday, May 20th. Below you can see the results of the Doodle. :)

Organisms Lesson - Biomimicry
Today in science we put our engineering hats on and we did an organisms lesson on biomimicry. Biomimicry is a product inspired by the structure and systems of nature including plants and animals. To prepare for this lesson we have been studying plants and animals as well as the features they have that help them to survive and grow.
The first product we investigated was an alarm clock. In groups the students then had to discuss what animal or plant this product may have been inspired by. They also had to discuss what we learned from them as well as what human problem the product solved. All groups determined that the alarm clock was inspired by the rooster. We mimic the sound and it helps us wake up on time.
The second product that we investigated was Velcro. Again in groups the students had to discuss what animal or plant this product was inspired by. They again discussed what we learned from them as well as what human problem the product solved. All groups determined that Velcro was inspired by burs (seeds that stick to clothing and fur/hair). This is a common problem on our playground so that background information was helpful. :) They determined we mimic the "sticky" hooks and that they keep things together.
It was a great day for science in our classroom! :)
